Too early to tell, we don't know the motive behind this. Guy could just have a grudge against Abe or mentally ill. Also, he is a former PM, not a sitting one.

Only positive is he is not a sitting PM. Really crazy the guy made a homemade gun, must have really hated Abe to go through all that. Wondering if we will find out his true reason for doing this.

The ex-PM had a team of security guards but obviously they were really below standard as no one came up when the assassin came up close to the ex-PM from behind

It's not in Japan's tradition to escort an ex-PM with heavy security in a public settings, unlike in the west. But, this incident might bring changes.
