The 2021 Italian (Monza) F-1 GP has just finished. It was the first race with live TV coverage in Canada which provided so much drama.
1. The final results - Ricciardo, Norris, Bottas.
2. The dramas:
a. Max had the pole & we all expected him to lead from the start, BUT Ricciardo led from start to finish to win the race.
b. Hamilton started with Hard tires while all the front runners used Med Compounds. It was MB's strategy to use hard compound since Hamilton started in the 4th spot. This strategy almost worked.
c. Max's Red Bull was not fast enough to threaten Ricciardo, & decided to pit for fresh tires. The pit stop was a disaster & he was stationary for 11" (?).
d. Hamilton couldn't do much to Norris who was in front, & decided to pit within the subsequent 2 laps. When Hamilton came out, he needed time to warm up the tires although he was ahead of Max. At the first chicane turns, Max was behind but tried to muscle his way through. Hamilton was in front & was not prepared to give in without a fight. The two cars touched, knocking both cars out. Max's car landed ON TOP of Hamilton'c car. If there was no halo protection to protect the driver head, Hamilton could be decapitated! Anyway, it was my opinion that although it was a racing incident, Max should be given a warning as Hamilton was a 1/2 car length ahead all the time.
e. With both Max & Hamilton out of the race, McLaren's Ricciardo & Norris won both top spots.
f. Bottas started from the last spot, worked his way to the 4th with Perez in front. Perez was given a 5" penalty for exceeding the track limit 3 times. This promoted Bottas to third.
Bottas had no problem working his way from last to 4th until he closed in on Perez & seemed to have lost all ambition. Don't forget Bottas' car was faster than the two McLarens as proven by his Qualifying times & the Sprint Race, & if he had overtaken Perez, he could have given the two McLarens a run for their money as well. Since Bottas did not overtake Perez, he was promoted to 3rd at the end of the race when Perez was given the 5" penalty.
There is one more thing which I must bring up. McLaren is using MB engine, & its performance has been impressive for the last 4 to 5 races while MB under performed. The only 2 possibilities: McLaren has better drivers which cannot be true; better aerodynamics than MB which is more likely - ever since MB lost it technical team to RB which became a real contender while MB's advantage deteriorated quickly. |
