Granted the photos show mostly the poor, and nothing of how the rich live (understandably they will not allow "gwei-los" to intrude into their lifes), they show glimpses of daily life.

Well, has something to do with the Qing Dynasty which root from Machurian people up North want the Ming dynasty Han people to show their complete surrenders both politically and culturally back in 1644 something... The zist of it was something like "Cut the hair and keep the head, (or) keep the hair and cut the head"... So either follow their way or die sorta scenario...

It truly is amazing to see how fast grew into such prosperity. I hope one day there is a good documentary about the rise of China.
