Next weekend is probably is the pinnacle of motor racing because:
1. Monaco GP. This is the race that all Formula 1 drivers want to win because it is held on the famous street course in Monaco. Over the years, multiple Monaco winners will be considered the best driver of that era because a) Driver with the fastest and most powerful car may not win; b) The street course is narrow and challenging, one tiny mistake and you will hit the wall; c) It requires 450+ gear shifts per lap, used to be very demanding with manual gear shifts, paddle shifter changed all that.
2. Indianapolis 500. I never find oval racing requires that much skill except a big heart. Anyway, it is the biggest open-wheeler race in USA and has the largest winning purse and spectators. In the past, some F-1 went over and won outright just to prove F-1 requires much higher skills (e.g. Graham Hill, Jimmy Clark, Nigel Mansell). This year, another F-1 driver and a 2 time World Champio - Alonso will try his hand at Indy by skipping Monaco GP. During practice which can last one whole week, Alonso is already the 5th fastest without even driving there before. Keep in mind, practice is NOT qualifying.
500 means 500 miles = 250 times around the oval track, and it will last 3+ hours! |
