First, I tip my hat in respect for the doctor in Wuhan who lost his life treating patients. He was a brave and good man. My condolences go out to the victims and their families. So far this is what we have seen and know:
1. Three Beijing hospitals have started treating patients with the anti-HIV drugs Lopinavir and Ritonavir. There are also other ant-viral drugs that may help but this is all new. The blueprint of the virus is known and has been shared. With the receptor sites on the virus known, present drugs can be tried that may work. The above drugs are generic and manufactured in quantity India and China. Hope that this approach can help symptoms and cut the death rate,
2. There are no reported deaths outside of Wuhan except for on older man in an adjacent province who spent 2 months in Wuhan. This might be due to more availability of ant-viral drugs in other areas. The virus might be most dangerous in the initial animal to human infection. It may weaken with subsequent human to human transmission.
3. Don't put too much faith in screening by temperature or symptoms. Infected virus carriers may be contagious for up to 2 weeks before showing symptoms. Watch India to see how this plays out.
4. As for my own precautions I have ordered a box of masks that I hope I do not need to use. I will not be traveling to Canada until this settles out because I do not want to be in a place where I am not fully covered by my health insurance. Also, the condo building where I stay in Toronto has many affluent Chinese students who may have recently returned from China. They could be asymptomatic for 2 weeks but still be carriers. This may be an over-reaction toward caution on my part but I have been on the elevators before all this happened with coughing people. That being said, the wheezers at that time were all white people. Coughing people at a bank recently in Yorkville were all kinds of folks. I got a quadrivalent cell grown flu shot this year and that protects against 4 potential expected strains.
Do what you can to protect yourself and others. Kobe went up in a helicopter in foggy conditions when sheriff and police helicopters were grounded. Don't have so much hubris you show no caution. But respect everybody and don't be paranoid. I expect deaths to continue to be very low outside of Wuhan and especially low in counties with an adequate supply of anti-viral drugs. The South China Morning Post has been a good source of info. |
