IMHO, Schumacher was not and will never be among the racing greats because he joined Ferrari at a time when Ferrari was dominant while other teams were not even close. In addition he was a dirty driver, he intentionally hit Damon Hill during the final race of a year to win the championship. The following year, he tried the same tactics on Venenlue something (check spelling) the Canadain driver, but it backfired and the Canadian won his one and only world championship.
I also blamed Schumacher for the death of Aryton Senna because he did not remove the software for improving a car's cornering ability (I forgot the right term) which was legal the previous year but banned that following year. due to this hidden advantage, Senna was forced to drive, perhaps just a little over his limit, resulting in his untimely death.
After the race, Schumacher's car (Benneton) was found with the software in question installed, but he said he never turned it on. How could anyone find out whether the software was turned on or not?? It was all politics, F-1 Management accepted this ridiculous explanation and subsequent report never dwelt on this possible cheating.
Coming back to the issue you raised, if and when Hamilton breaks all existing record, he might join Ferrari to satisfy a dream/fantasy even when Ferrari is half-competitive. Right now MB will give Hamilton the best chance of setting a new championship record!
