China only allows truly verfied SIM to be in use. Any time a new SIM is issued , one will need to show ID or passport to associate with that SIM.
As a result, the SIM card is really to be trusted and used the phone number as a Pseudo ID to spend (wechat,alipay), buy transportation tickets (no need to do the TSA thing on checking you as NO FLY list passenger).
As a matter of fact, hard not to have the convenience of using phone to pay for bike use, buy train or plane tickets. They know if you say pay, you will be tracked for future issues , or someone can find you.
Only credit card widely used is UNION PAY, no visa,mastercard unless at the hotels.
When will the rest of world do the same ?
Same as phone numbers to use to contact anyone, got to be real not IMAGINARY.
