I went to China a couple months ago. The government track everything, need ID to buy train ticket. Need ID to get into train station and need to get your pictures taken when you go check in at hotel. The government always knows where you are if you use any public transportation or hotel.

It seems to be standard now. I was in Guangzhou for a bit. I took one of my friends with me, he has a record with drugs. Once we got our pictures taken at the hotel, the cops arrived within 15 minutes. I also had to get my picture taken at my hotel in Beijing.
Yeah, he's good. They just had him do a pee in a cup drug test. He's been clean for a year now. Basically they're using the prevention of crime as an excuse to keep track of everyone.
