The fact is, US politicians are illiterates as far as Asian history goes.
These so-called South China Seas islands have always been part of China for hundreds of years (as per Chinese history and geographical records) and nobody questioned it until China becomes stronger and decided to set up military bases to protect the vital oil tanker sea routes in case of war.
1. When US was colonial master in Philippines, after driving out Spain (US didn't want to mention this chapter of history), US announced the territorial boundaries of Philippines, these islands were outside the declared border. US could have easily mentioned them, but was not even aware of their existence!!!
2. Right after WWII, the National Chinese Government stationed troops on the largest of these islands, called Taiping Island, and Taiwan troops are still on the island even up to this day. There is an airport on Taiping Island and yet during one of the recent WH news briefings, the WH Press Spokeswoman even called this "a rock". There is a HUGE difference between an island with an airport and a rock.
If it is indeed a rock, why should US bother about a rock in the S. China Sea and thousand of miles from US West Coast. Has US extended its territorial boundary to S. China Seas and who gave them US the permission to extend this boundary line?
Containment of any country by another country is a bullish act. Hiding behind proxies, e.g. Philippines and Australia (Philippines refused to do it in the most recent RP statements) is a cowardly act!
3. How come US never mentioned or occupied these rocks during the Vietnam War?
How one country run its domestic affairs is none of US' business, and vice versa. That is why no country protests about the shooting of innocent blacks by US police and the slaughtering of native Indians 200 years ago and the mistreatment of them even up to this date (Canada is not innocent on this count), or the annexation of vast amount of Mexican territories.
There is no doubt that China will become stronger, even surpassing USA, both militarily and economically. If China does not already have nuclear weapons and more advanced laser weapons in outer space, US would have invaded China (e.g. Iraq) under the pretext of searching for WMD or would have initiated Green revolutions (e.g. Libya).
Again, the best solution to this tricky situation is to clean up its own act, compete fairly and quietly and not push China closer to Russia to form a military alliance.
China has no intention to be too close to Russia and weary of its intentions as history will tell; forcing them into bed-mates will be a disaster for the world and for a declining world power, like USA, to handle!
