Today is the anniversary of 7-7 Marco Polo Bridge Incident which officially started the Sino-Japanes war in the 20th century. Please note the word "started" because Japanese troops were in China for close to half a century, but China had to tolerate as it was weak and was no match for Japan's military
Japan had to to start a war to conquer China as a first step to fulfill its dream of world dorminance ambition. Any later than that, it would be more difficult because the Ching Dynasty was overthrown in 1911 and a Republic was formed; but the country was only a was truly unified after the warlords were subdued and Republic was on its first step to modernization/development, so Japan decided to destroy it before it was too late.
