It was a miraculous finish for Hamilton and MB Team and the tire strategy.

Hamilton started from 14th, but decided on using super soft tires so that he could catch the front runners quickly before the threatening rain.

Hamilton drove 37 laps on those tires when Pirelli (tire manufacturer) said they would last 35.  MB wanted to change to rain tires until the very last minute to save on one pit stop.  Rain never came, so Hamilton came in for super soft again.   A few laps later, rain came but only a few drops. Team called Hamilton to pit, but he "missed the entrance" and decided to continue, and the drizzle stopped.

Of course, Vettel crashed because of the rain, and Hamilton won with one less pit stop than the rest of the field.

What a finish!

Bottas got a chance to over take Hamilton after the safety car was off.
But MB told him on the radio to hold position and keep Kimi off Hamilton.

I doubt it.

Getting close and overtaking are two different matters, because Hamilton had fresher tires on at that point, once the tires reached normal speed, Bottas won't even get close as Hamilton set up more lap records an pulled away as witnessed in the final few laps.

After the German GP, Hamilton retakes the Drivers Championship lead by 17 points which is substantial with evenly matched teams on all aspects, furthermore, there is Red Bull - a spoiler, on the side, waiting to turn the table.

The next race is the Hungarian GP which is coming this Sunday.

Speaking of drivers, Kimi - Vettel's team mate, drives better than last year, particularly in the last 2 -3 races.  Frankly, Ferrari should ask him to stay for another year before promoting a younger driver who may not be able to serve as Vettel's "body guard".

2018's Hungarian F-1 GP is this coming Sunday.  Will keep you all posted.

The drivers/teams had their first practice session which didn't mean much.

2018's HUNGARIAN F-1 GP Qualifying Session has ended and MB, lead by Hamilton, placed 1, 2.  Followed by Kimi, and Vettel.

There is no doubt that Hamilton is the rain master of his era because whenever it rains, Hamilton excels while Vettel is not. With a few drizzle at the German GP, Vettel crashed out, but Hamilton using the same Ultra Soft tires went on to win.

Kimi also out qualified his team mate - Vettel, for sure Kimi is a much better rain driver than Vettel.  If Ferrari does not give Kimi one more year's contract, they will regret it.

If it rains, I think the finish will be exactly the same as the qualifying session

There will be live telecast at 0900.  Check your local listings.

MB used Bottas to hold off Kimi and Vettel in turn 1 and 2.
Hamilton is leading with 4.9 sec, Bottas is 1.9 sec ahead of Vettel in lap 12.

We'll see how both sides manage their tires.
It could get interesting later in the race.

It was a dull race.

Hamilton led from start to finish.

The action was between P2, P3, & P4 in the final stages.  Anyway, Hamilton, Vettel, Kimi, then Bottas.

2018's F-1 will have a summer break of one month and will resume racing end of Aug.

Based on what happened up to now, I feel:

1.  Ferrari has a slight edge, speed-wise Vs MB.
2.  MB is ahead because of Hamilton's better driving, and MB's tire strategy.  Bottas improved but still unlucky, hopefully better luck in 2019.
3.  Kimi never showed his card until Ferrari was to dump him him in 2019.  Nothing is concrete yet, Ferrari can still offer Kimi a one year deal before some other team signs him.
4.  Red Bull is not a contender for 2018 for both contructors and drivers championship.  2019 is even more unclear as Red Bull is switching from Renault to Honda.

This just came in, and took everyone by surprise --Daniel Ricciardo signed with Renault starting 2019:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlGmxWX3IPw

It is NOT a bad move for DR:

1.  His current teammate - Max Verstappen improved very quickly, DR is feeling the pressure and can see Max becoming #1 driver in Red Bull.

2.  Red Bull's current engine supplier is Renault but will move to Honda next year.  Let us not kid ourselves, Honda is not the same after Aryerton Senna days.  Red Bull may not be competitive in 2019 on.

3.  RD will be the #1 driver in Renault, and will be relied heavily upon for future engine development inputs.

4.  $! Who can refuse this?

Just remember this, When Vettel was with Red Bull, his temperament forced the departure/retirement of his teammate.  Then DR joined Red Bull, and was obviously a faster driver then Vettel.  Vettel was offered a Ferrari ride and departed.  Ferrari was at best, only second best for a few years until 2018.  So DR is quite a respectable driver!
