That wouldn't serve my purpose. I don't even want him/her knows I read the message. All depends on what his/her requests (borrow money ), I pretend I was not there hence I haven't read the message.

I hate it when people do that too. Either ignore it, or reply really late, like maybe a week later and tell them "next time just directly say what you want because i'll ignore ppl who ask me if i'm there"
Yea just ignore it. You do whatever that makes you feel better. There is no reason to make yourself have to reply. Also being polite is a good quality, but you don't have to always keep it that way. Otherwise, it would be more like a psychological 'shackle' than just a quality that a good person has.
In order to converse, one needs to make sure that the other party is AVAILABLE to talk. Even if she/he is available, is she/he available to TALK TO YOU.
If no response, no more follow up.
There is nothing wrong with it. It is wrong if you just put in a long winded question and expecting a replay. Then that is intruding.
Messaging on Wechat is direct, unlike calling to a landline #; you need to say 'Hello' to make sure the right person picking up the call. If I'm available to chat, I'll reply, there is no need to message 'are you there?'.
Similarly, you no longer need to say 'over' after each conversation such as with a 'walkie-talkie'.
