Democracy is defined as one man one vote, be the person rich or poor.
But US congress (House) has average of 750,000 persons per voting district, Senate 2 per state.
Senate the boundaries are set in concrete, not changes.
But House is not. The boundaries of each district is defined by the state legislature, mostly every 10 years after Census.
There is a term called Gerry Mandaring (name after Gerry Mandar at 1812).
The voting districts could be drawn to favor one party, in this case Republicans mostly.
Trump was elected with a minority in total votes of whole countries, but the Congress has a majority of both House and Senate.
House due to the voter district lines and Senate due to the small states going Republican and converative, while larger ones going Democratic and liberal. There are more small states than larger ones.
Urban areas have a larger population, the voter districts can be drawn to get a minority of democrats from a big city to just let the district a little higher number of republican. OR let all the concentration of lots of democrats centered on one voter district with say 80% of democrats and thus still one congressman to waster the rest of population (ie sure win, but only one vote).
Democracy can be manipulated to your way, what can I say. |
