Well, it's a very comprehensive question. You see most of chinese poem consists of 7 or 5 characters is because these poem you familiar with is after Tang Dynasty. Ancient people used to use 6 or 4 characters in the poem such as Shi Jing and Chu Ci (created before Qin Dynasty). However, people after Tang Dynasty started to create poem with rhyme. So they created different formats such as 5 characters poem, 7 characters poem and Song Ci. 5 characters poem can be divided as 2/1/2 or 2/2/1, the vowel of last character of first sentence have to be as same as the last character of third sentence. Same as second and forth sentence. It's very very comprehensive but there are two things I can see. First, Chinese ancient poem used least words to describe huge world. Second, poem may contain 1 to 9 characters depending on its format. |
