You must be Cantonese speaking.  Even now, people in HK are still bad with Mandarin.  
Best way to learn is to get Mandarin Speaking GF or wife.

係呀！師兄我講廣東話，國語識聽，但係講得好差，講國語嘅MM一般都識聽廣東話，所以無問題
我識閩南話，所以揾台灣妹都無問題，蒙古蘇聯混血兒嘅QiQi就真係講唔掂
