But I thought they use card for the reader, not keys.

One place I had even got the card access to ONLY your floor.  No neighbor on a different floor CANNOT even visit you.  Super Private.

Lol. This reminded me of my first hunting in HK some yrs ago... It was a new hotel in wan chai, and I couldn't find the elevator up.. And I talked to the girl receptionist asking for direction.. N then later on, I heard her saying on the mic.. The "雞蟲上樓now"... I am like omg..

And another time when I went to 大富豪 in hk one afternoon, one Steward lady was cleaning at the entrance door for the room nearby. She saw me knocking at the room beside.. n u can tell she was so despised with me.. Cuz she can tell I m a 雞蟲

Lol.. 無計.. She locked that floor on the elevator.. Not giving me the access.. Since it was my first time to that unfamiliar ground

Usually for 1st time customer, the 雞頭stands nearby.. On the elevator door, or floor watching to c if u r trying to "fishing" as an police officer.. But speaking aloud on mic.. I had to pretend not knowing Cantonese after speaking cantonese to the receptionist..so awkward..
