This is similar to China 40's Nationalist vs Communist fight.
Except Communist got intellectuals (or ...
You are wrong!
Democracy existed only in name in China in 1948.
The Nationalist Government lost mainland because:
1. The Chinese were tired of continuous fighting for years and years and wanted to have peace, definitely not interested in Chinese killing Chinese.
2. US President Harry Truman, another one of US Presidents who did not study history, believed in Communist propaganda that Mao represented the people and issued a "White Paper" (a Government's
stand on major issues), denouncing Chiang, and stopped selling military equipments to Chiang, while USSR which rounded up all Japanese military equipments in Manchuria and gave them to the Chinese Communists.
A lot of Chiang's commanders were disheartened and changed sides.
So mainland was lost in slightly over a year while the Nationalist Chinese army fought the better equipped Japanese army for 8+ years - lost a vast majority of land but NOT the whole country.
Do a search, I posted a lot on political subjects including this. That is how I got my points.
