New cars in 5 years might have driverless feature (may be 7 years, give it some buffer).

Even Warren Buffet with Geico (original government employee insurance) comments that the industry may change drastically.
Now with Collision Avoidance then Braking,  Lane departure then Lane assist (on 2016 Subaru for sure, I will be buying it), rear cross traffic warning, blindspot etc.
The collisions will be way down.  The payout from car insurance companies will be way lower.  How can they justify high premium, especially state and provincial regulators are monitoring their profit margin?   So be prepare to pay LESS for car premium and LESS accidents.  Man, world is indeed getting better.

Business Week:

Currently auto insurance revenue for US is 196Bn.  Estimate that 2030, car owner will save 60% due to the driverless type features incorporated into Car.  Auto insurance may have a new stream of revenue from Car Insurance purchased by AUTO companies.  They want to insure their cars did not fail and caused the accident.  Either defect or hacking by outsider.  The class action could be very expensive hit on their bottom line.

Ten major automakers have come up with an agreement to add automatic emergency braking as a standard feature on all their new cars, a feature that could reduce auto insurance claims by as much as 35%.

The deal was announced by the U.S. Department of Transportation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the auto safety arm of the insurance industry, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Automatic emergency braking involves radar, sensors and lasers that can detect when another vehicle is stopped ahead and warn the driver. If the driver doesn't react, the car will automatically slam on the brakes and bring itself to a stop before a rear-end accident can occur.

It's already in some mid-market vehicles now, usually as a $250 to $400 option, but the agreement would bring it to every vehicle. It could represent the next big safety advancement that could have the impact of seat belts, anti-lock brakes and traction control.

"If technologies such as automatic emergency braking are only available as options or on the most expensive models, too few Americans will see the benefits," says Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx in a statement. "These 10 companies are committing to making AEB available to all new-car buyers."

Audi, BMW, Ford, General Motors, Mazda, Mercedes Benz, Tesla, Toyota, Volkswagen and Volvo have all agreed to hammer out the details with the agencies, including coming up with a timeline, the Transportation Department announced. Together, they represented 57% of new vehicle sales in 2014.

Foxx says automatic emergency braking represents a new era in auto safety aimed at preventing accidents from ever occurring, rather than simply trying to protect passengers when they happen. The agreement shows, too, that the government is willing to work to forge agreements with automakers rather than simply mandate safety improvements.

The National Transportation Safety Board issued a 60-page report in June asking that automatic braking be required on new cars, saying it would save 1,700 lives a year and eliminate 500,000 injuries.

In this case, safety advocates say the systems could make a huge difference.

"Forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking is the biggest safety advancement since the introduction of stability control over two decades ago," says Jake Fisher, director of auto testing for Consumer Reports, which issued a statement supporting the move. "This is such an important safety feature that all other manufacturers should bring it to their vehicles as soon as possible."
