Nixon was definitely NOT the worst. He was very knowledgeable on international affairs and served as VP under Dwight Eisenhower for 8 years.
He made a name for himself during the "kitchen debate" with Nikita Kruchev (check spelling).
In his first presidential bid, he actually won the popularity votes but lost on the delegate votes.
Some historians commented had Nixon won against Kennedy, the Cuba Missile Crisis would never have happened because USSR was testing the resolve of a young, inexperienced Kennedy while Nixon was known to take a hard stand against the polar bear.
Nixon's downfall was the Watergate Scandal. He will win handily for the 2nd term but he wanted a landslide victory as cornerstone of his legacy, then he lied and covered up during the subsequent investigations which sealed his fate.
Bill Clinton lied under oath too - "I never had a sexual relationship with that woman, Lewinsky". However, Clinton was lucky because the Senate was under Democrats control, and he got off the hook!
