DPP acquired 56% of the popularity vote, the teenage girl cannot sway 6+% of the votes.
The main issue was economy. Taiwan's economy has been stagnant because good-sized factories moved to China for cheaper labour and voters blamed the ruling party. What they didn't realize is that if China plays hard ball with economy card, Taiwan will be choked to death. They thought independence was the way to go, unfortunately China will never allow that to happen and will use force if required.
Do you really think USA will risk a nuclear showdown with China over Taiwan? In a nuclear showdown, USA will surely win, but can USA afford taking a few nuclear hits as a result?
Even a few thousand deaths in Iraq will make USA decide to pull out, a nuclear hit will cost several million lives, none of USA's male presidents have balls to see that happen (don't know how to describe it if Clinton becomes the female president in USA).
USA wants status quo but unification will come when China's per capita income surpasses Taiwan by a comfortable margin! My guess is no more than 20 years! |
