US TRAINS JAPANESE TROOPS FOR AMPHIBIOUS ASSAULT
http://nation.time.com/2013/06/1 ... d-waters/?hpt=hp_t5
The above is significant not only for the joint exercise but also for subtly putting US support in Japan's island disputes with neighbouring countries, particularly China.
The issue of Diaoyu Island was created by ignorant USA politicians.
Diaoyu Island, which are closer to Taiwan than Okinawa, was never part of Ryuku Islands (the Japanese call them Okinawa), it has always been part of Taiwan Hsien during the Ching Dynasty.
Even maps published by Japan during its occupation of Taiwan, clearly marked Diaoyu Islands as part of Taiwan!
After WWII, USA put troops on Ryuku for its existing military facilities. Daioyu Islands are just some barren rocks sticking out of the ocean. There is no fresh water supply & no flat land long enough to accommodate runways & Diaoyu Islands were ignored, but never by the two Chinese Governments.
When perceived oil deposits & fishery resources became an issue & USA returned Ryuku's administrative authority to Japan in the late 80's, Japan started to lay claims on Diaoyu Islands. However, both Chinese governments needed investments & international recognition, which played right into the hands of Japan.
In recent years, as a result of growing economic & military power, China (the one on the mainland) started flexing its muscles to demonstrate to Japan that China will not take this shit from Japan.
Militarily, Japan is no match for China today & therefore, the joint military exercise.
Keep watching how this develops. Don't forget Japan also has island dispute with Korea, which I don't know enough to comment. |
