The resentment issue is complicated. Part of me thinks bros need to be more than a little desensitized to money to do this hobby right. Or if they have less money they need to do a ton of research before deciding whom to trust and which mm to see. Otherwize, the bad sessions, which unavoidably crop up from time to time, will deliver too much sting and rob the good sessions of their sweetness. The problem is human psychology. Most people, according to behavioral psychologists and economists, experience the anguish of loss more acutely than they experience the pleasure of victory. Some studies suggest that the emotional reaction is actually twice as strong. I think scholars call this bias "loss aversion." You know, human beings are funny creatures -- imperfect and not entirely rational. Because even if you are aware such a bias exists, it won't mean you're necessarily magically liberated from its grip. I know it exists and have a bit of "fun" money, but still sometimes resentment does get the better of me. Part of that is due, I think, to the fact I'm new to the hobby. But the other part stems from a different set of expectations than what you have, for example. You regard the hobby as the "pooning casino," which obviously implies that each and every session could potentially be money down the drain. That perspective is way better -- and healthier -- than my own I suspect. My expectations, I have to admit, are higher. When I go hunting, I expect not subpar service, but average service. If it's better, I'm delighted. If it's average, I don't resent it but I certainly won't repeat. But if it's seriously subpar and I've done my utmost to be clean and respectful, let's just say I'm not exactly thrilled about it. I find it unprofessional and, in some cases, a kind of swindle. Irrespective of the money, though, I think I just don't like having bad memories where sex is involved. Call me crazy. lol.
Maybe eventually I will adopt your attitude. But until that happens the only thing one can do to limit "losses" is to either frequent the highest quality garages or spend more time trying to decide which reviewers are more trustworthy -- even if YMMV is always a factor. |
