This forum is way too unfriendly to new users

I'm just leaving a message here for the mods so they can know why I'm not going to bother coming back to this forum anymore, and the same applies for a lot of new users. I don't care what you think but just thought you guys need to know why the community is shrinking on this forum.

SmallPotato went ahead and gave me a penalty for trying to contribute to the community. Great because my rank never allowed me to search on the forum, so how should I know which questions or threads are redundent?

And all those requirements to make posts and start new threads just to access areas of the site are impossible for a new user. Fuck this shit, if you guys don't want new community members then don't open registration. I can already see why this forum has so many people creating threads with zero replies, the moderation here is not making it easy at all for new people to get into the community. Even as a Chinese person this is not worth the effort trying to get into this forum.

Please cut this whining and passive aggressive bullshit. Its just lame. If you want to leave, that is fine. But saying "I don't care but....." ? If you don't care what people think then why would you want to let them know? That's about as lame and illogical as a hysterical woman yelling "I'm not emotional!" LOL

First of all, you didn't contribute anything. You opened a post to ask a question for which there is already a post about in the same section where you posted it.

You asked what the best steakhouse in Toronto was, while there already is another post titled "Best STEAKHOUSES in Toronto" on the second page of the the "Food & Drink" which only has 3 pages. You don't need to use the search function to look over 3 pages worth of titles.

Our forum rules are not created all on Day 1 because we want to be arbitrarily bossy. It was developed over time to solve problems as we saw them arise.

One example is our rule of titles. Since titles are the only searchable element, we needed to enforce clearly articulated titles that can be retroactively searchable down the road when they are buried deep within hundreds of pages worth of titles. The rule has a practical rationale behind them even if the average user doesn't see (or doesn't care to understand) what the rationale is and think we are just being Nazis.

Likewise, we discourage duplicate posts. A problem we noticed is that many people are lazy (no crime in that and we don't blame them). However, left unchecked, that results in guys who don't even bother to put in the least bit of effort to search for the info they want, but instead rather just open a new post asking for whatever they want, so that the info can be spoon-fed to them.

One lazy question post encourages another, and more pop up. Pretty soon whole sections becomes saturated with question posts; often times even the question posts are repetitive with 10+ posts all asking the same thing, because the posters were too lazy (or stupid) to noticed that the same question has been asked 10 times already (on the same page). Such avalanche of question posts literally buries any useful posts containing worthwhile information. It becomes a vicious cycle where no one even bothers to contribute info or answer questions anymore because its utterly pointless, because lazy guys don't read them and so even if you answer the questions, the next day 10 other guys open new posts to ask the exact same questions again because they were to lazy to read the prior posts on the same topic. But by that point you can't even blame the new guys who posts their own question posts, because who has time to read through 50-100 similar question posts to find their answer?

I know what you are thinking. You're probably thinking that I'm exaggerating, or crazy, or that there's no way what I described could happen. I assure you, not only can it happened, but it has ACTUALLY ALREADY HAPPENED in the past and almost destroyed the forum turning it into junkyard filled with random repetitive question posts until we finally cleaned it all out and implemented the new rule.

Lastly, regarding certain aspects of the forum open to higher-ranking members, that is only fair to reward those who contribute and who respect the rules. Your complaint of being unable to immediately access EVERYTHING as a new user shows your spoiled self-centered and entitled mentality. If you think everything should be handed to you on a silver-platter and you deserve it just for showing up, well sorry but you're in the wrong place.

So in conclusion. You can come or stay, its up to you. If you don't like how things are run here, you don't have to stay. But please don't whine and badmouth what you don't understand.

PS: The community has been steadily rising over the course of almost 10 years, never shrinking. Which means we are doing this right. This is confirmed by third-party sources such as Alexa rankings and Google Analytics. Everybody claims to be biggest and best, but we don't make such boasts. Instead we asked anyone who is interested to know, to check authoritative souces (Alexa & Google).
