The city is expecting about 25,000 people to attend the #TorontoStrong vigil in Mel Lastman Square on Sunday night, in memory of those killed and affected by the deadly van carnage on Yonge St.
The vigil begins at 7 p.m., and will feature musical performances by local choirs, and speakers from local faith-based groups.
The square itself has a capacity of 3,000, and will be open to the public all day.
“I hope we can show by our presence at this vigil the compassion of our city but also Toronto’s strength and resiliency in the face of terrible tragedy,” Mayor John Tory tweeted.
Four large screens will be set up — two facing south on Yonge St., one facing north, and one in the square — with a live feed to the stage.
Yonge will be closed from Sheppard Ave. to at least Park Home Ave., with rolling road closures leading up to the 7 p.m. start to accommodate two community walks to the vigil.
The prime minister and other dignitaries have been invited to attend.
City staff are encouraging all attendees to take transit, as public parking will be severely limited to accommodate the vigil and for safety. |
