Mainland China's economy took off only after Deng took over after Mao's death. Prior to that time, Taiwan was one of the four Little Asian Dragons.
When Taiwan's per capita income was US$15,000, China was about $150. Cheap labour attracted foreign firms to set up factories in China, this included Taiwan factories moving production facilities to Provinces on the other side of the Taiwan Strait.
The tide started to change, then.
If people in Taiwan were allowed to travel freely to China, which they didn't at that time, the reaction would be equally 震撼, and out despise of the communism too!
I was among the first to check out the China market in the early 70's, my recommendation to H/O was "not yet, let's wait a few more years".
To name just a few peculiarities which I had first-hand experience during those times:
1. Buffet breakfast table in a "5-Star hotel" was always surrounded by waitresses who were so starved that they would self-serve first. Hotel guests couldn't even get close to the table.
All meals in and out of hotels are served between FIXED times. No foods will be served outside that time frame.
2. You cannot get a taxi although plenty of them were parked outside the hotel, until you first register your destination with the front desk first + duration of that visit.
3. Local shops and taxis will not and cannot accept foreign currencies, only "Foreign Currencies Vouchers" which you can only get them from Official Money Changers stationed at the hotel at official rates.
4. Local factories will be pleased to entertain outside visitors because taking advantage of the situation, all close relatives of factory management will tag along for the free meal!
I can go on and on for hours..............
The point I want to make is, cheap labour and potential buying/consumption power, and most importantly overseas Chinese (particularly S.E Asia) desire to see a stronger motherland prompted heavy investment in China. During the first 10 years after China opened it doors, overseas Chinese investment in China was greater than all foreign investment COMBINED.
Communism did not build a strong China, overseas Chinese did, and started the momentum! |
