P2P Lending

Was in Taipei last year (2016), notice very orderly population.  I kicked a moving car in Shenzhen for horning me when I tried to walk via Zebra crossing.

Funny how many Vespa type scooter in Taipei, more popular than cars.

But still not as prosperous as Mainland and limited future due to the smaller economy.

Wonder why more people are coming to TO as non civilians.

Mainland China's economy took off only after Deng took over after Mao's death.  Prior to that time, Taiwan was one of the four Little Asian Dragons.

When Taiwan's per capita income was US$15,000, China was about $150.  Cheap labour attracted foreign firms to set up factories in China, this included Taiwan factories moving production facilities to Provinces on the other side of the Taiwan Strait.

The tide started to change, then.

If people in Taiwan were allowed to travel freely to China, which they didn't at that time, the reaction would be equally 震撼, and out despise of the communism too!

I was among the first to check out the China market in the early 70's, my recommendation to H/O was "not yet, let's wait a few more years".

To name just a few peculiarities which I had first-hand experience during those times:

1.  Buffet breakfast table in a "5-Star hotel" was always surrounded by waitresses who were so starved that they would self-serve first.  Hotel guests couldn't even get close to the table.

All meals in and out of hotels are served between FIXED times.  No foods will be served outside that time frame.

2.  You cannot get a taxi although plenty of them were parked outside the hotel, until you first register your destination with the front desk first + duration of that visit.

3.  Local shops and taxis will not and cannot accept foreign currencies, only "Foreign Currencies Vouchers" which you can only get them from Official Money Changers stationed at the hotel at official rates.

4.  Local factories will be pleased to entertain outside visitors because taking advantage of the situation, all close relatives of factory management will tag along for the free meal!

I can go on and on for hours..............

The point I want to make is, cheap labour and potential buying/consumption power, and most importantly overseas Chinese (particularly S.E Asia) desire to see a stronger motherland prompted heavy investment in China.  During the first 10 years after China opened it doors, overseas Chinese investment in China was greater than all foreign investment COMBINED.

Communism did not build a strong China, overseas Chinese did, and started the momentum!

Dr. Sun is from overseas too.

Sorry to say that you are wrong.

Dr.  Sun was born in Kwungtung, China, in a village called "tsui heng village".  Received initial schooling the traditional way.  Later on in life, he attended the University of HK and obtained his Doctor of Medicine Degree with top honours. He actually practised medicine for a short while in HK.

Having witnessed the foreign powers "dissecting" the Ching Dynasty, he accepted revolutionary ideas, spent many years in UK, Japan, & USA to avoid persecution by Ching Dynasty's agents .....

He garnered tremendous support from oversea Chinese, particularly those on the West Coast of USA which funded the 9 failed military attempts to overthrow the Ching Dynasty.  The final uprising was OCT10 1911 in Wu-Chang, China...............

The overseas Chinese were more than willing to help as they were treated like 3rd class residents (not even citizens) and were so eager to see China strong again.

Dr. Sun was not an oversea Chinese, but without their financial support, the revolution will never be successful.

Yes, overseas Chinese support played a significant but quiet role in re-defining recent Chinese history!
