Actually lots of low end cars in US and even Canada already got it.
It will cut down injuries for little kids and little toy trucks etc.

But why would they stop there.
Beep from shift to reverse is available for Trucks.  
That beeping sound can cheaply and easily be made available.

Lots of times, no one notice reverse white light in the rear end, other than the car drivers backing out too.
Pedestrian may not see car backing out, the driver may not see pedestrian.  A beeping sound would definitely ALERT the person walking behind it.   WHY NOT MAKE IT MANDATORY TOO.

Blind spot detection is common these days. Same with features like frontal radar that automatically brakes for the driver. These features make the car semi autonomous. Self driving cars are coming down the road.

Unfortunately on the premium euro cars, they are still considered options. It really should be standard.
