Thoughts on the future of public transportation in the GTA?

As many know, our public transportation (most notably TTC) has been lagging behind in terms of technology and being connected to wider areas and other modes of transport. With the ongoing tug-of-war between having subway vs LRT, progress gets halted. I can only dream of having timely subway arrivals, and seamless affordable payment system across different transport services.

What are your views on how public transportation should be? Given that we already have an existing transportation infrastructure that is fragmented and Toronto being a fairly developed metropolitan city.

If this were Shanghai, Beijing , Shenzhen, we will already got N lines of subway going over the place.
No need to drive anymore in York, Vaughen, Peel and Durham.

As long as they allow the TTC union to exist and continue to prefer Canadian companies over foreign companies to manufacture and construct subway systems we will continue to have a mediocre public transit system.

Another thing is that Toronto has only 2 million people. Shanghai, Beijing, SZ have 7-14 million people EACH. Because they have so many people the fare to ride the subway in China is super cheap. At just a third of the cost they could maintain such a huge network.

What I think the government should do is break the TTC union. The ticket sellers are making over 100K a year! And for all future subway construction hire the guys who did the MTR in SZ and HK, not retarded bombardier and TTC.

From the above comments, subway seems to be the preferred and assumed mode of public transport to pursue, why is that the case?

For comparison:

-Greater Toronto Area (pop'n: ~6mil, density: ~850/km2 source)

-Beijing (pop'n: ~21mil, density: ~1300/km2 source
-Shanghai (pop'n: ~34mil, density: ~3800/km2 source
-Shenzhen (pop'n: ~11mil, density: ~5300/km2 source

So your number just indicated the density is a lot lower in TO than the other one.

Low rise vs High rise (as a matter super high rise compared to N. America, mostly 40 stories) and therefor the issue.

TO and GTA is trying to build up density of major roads with Subway or subway potential (witness Sheppard going east from fairview mall.  Talking about subway extension for a long time,  finally redeveloping the land to have high rises, but NOT to 40 story level yet,  WHY?.

May be we need to have Government sponsored development,  with some subsidised (say 10 percent) housing having future sale proceeds to be shared between government and resident for low income residents.  Raffle ticket may be the way to be fair based on luck.

Presto can trigger zone based fare structure then short distance commuter may just get on subway for a few stop instead of drivng the car.

Gasoline tax may discourage drivers for unnecessary trips or combining errands.  Proceeds going towards transportation, not GENERAL revenue for the city.
